Burlington has a humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. In July the average temperature is +21ºC, and in January the temperature drops to -7ºC. The average annual rainfall is about 940 mm. At the end of March, Burlington hosts Maple Open House Weekend, which celebrates Vermont’s pride in maple syrup. Not only does this event include tasting different variations of this sweet, but also a visit to the production facility.

Things to do in Burlington

  • Try the famous Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, which has become a world-famous brand. It was in Burlington where it was manufactured and the first Ben & Jerry’s store opened.
  • Take a stroll along the historic Church Street neighborhood. This is a pedestrian street that stretches through several blocks and where you can see beautiful red brick buildings of the XIX century. The most interesting sights are the Masonic Temple, The Richardson Building, Unitarian Church, and the former Howard Opera House. On Church Street you can sample great street food, listen to musicians, buy souvenirs and just relax on a bench.
  • Check out the Shelburne Museum, which covers eighteen acres. Its expositions are devoted to American pioneers, artists, transportation, toys, dishes. In total there are about 100 thousand exhibits.
  • Walk along the Lake Champlain waterfront or go sailing. There are regular scenic cruises, and those who like more active pastime can try their hand at windsurfing or paddleboarding.
  • Sample the local craft beer that Burlington prides itself on. One of the most popular breweries is Foam Brewers, which often releases new and unique brews.
  • Take a bike ride along Burlington’s waterfront and Oakledge Park. Take a bike on a special ferry to Grand Island (South Hero Island), which sits in the middle of Lake Champlain.
  • Visit the campus of the University of Vermont, where Ben Affleck studied. Here is the famous Old Mill building where the university began. The foundation stone was laid by the Marquis de Lafayette, a future general and one of the leaders of the American Revolution.
