Litchfield Jazz Camp Announces New Location for 2018

LITCHFIELD, CT: Litchfield Jazz Camp opens a new summer season at a new location in July 2018 at The Gunnery in Washington, CT. The critically acclaimed camp is one of the larger and longer-running jazz education programs in the nation. It attracts some 75 - 140 students a week throughout the month of July. Students are instrumentalists and vocalists, ages 13 to adult, with most in their mid-teens who hail from New England, 30+ states and abroad. More than 20 countries have been represented.

Litchfield Jazz Camp has been a special place for musical and personal growth for 22 years. A top-notch teaching staff coach groups at all levels in a supportive, collaborative atmosphere with no pre-audition required. Combo assignments are determined by on-arrival placement auditions.

Former Litchfield Campers are accepted at outstanding colleges and universities with many receiving merit scholarships. Those who decide on careers in music have won places in the Grammy Ensembles, placed in major competitions, and formed bands of their own. They appear in first rate clubs and festivals around the world, and become clinicians, teachers and mentors. Some have gone on to play with artists like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Cindy Blackman, Eddie Palmieri, Kenny Werner, Paquito Dí Rivera, Cyrus Chestnut, Alicia Keys, Macklemore, and Miley Cyrus, to name a few. In recent years, more and more Camp alumni are appearing on the Litchfield Jazz Festival Mainstage.

The Litchfield Jazz Camp experience includes lots of listening and performing opportunities. Nightly faculty concerts are attended by students and guests at no charge. Jams follow, and student combo concerts wrap up each week. A month of music is topped off by students attending and performing at the renowned Litchfield Jazz Festival, this year scheduled for July 28/29 at Goshen Fairgrounds.

The secret of the Campís success is the quality and dedication of its faculty and its inclusive, collaborative and supportive approach to teaching. Faculty members are all in-demand performers who teach at schools like Columbia, Williams, The New School, Amherst, Manhattan, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Purchase College and other respected institutions. Some of the Campís faculty now have icon status. Many are criticís poll winners, band leaders and sidemen with other jazz greats. The extraordinary faculty is led by Music Director, Don Braden assisted by the Campís Operations Director Albert Rivera and program founder and Director Vita Muir. Both Braden and Rivera are full time jazz performers, composers, and educators who have been with the Litchfield program for a collective total of 42 years. Muir, who has received numerous awards for her work, founded Litchfieldís programs 37 years ago and serves also as Executive Director of Litchfield Performing Arts and Artistic Director of Litchfield Jazz Festival.

Lessons at Litchfield Jazz Camp range from combo playing (up to 24 combos study simultaneous), to theory, composing, arranging, jazz history and master classes. Electives include big bands, ear training, sight reading, Latin percussion, songwriting, basic piano, and how to pick the right college. Other presentations look at the business of music, money management, nutrition, and living a rewarding life. The program includes opportunities for sports and exercise. Private lessons are available. A College Night is free of charge for campers, parents and interested community members and is attended by representative of a dozen top-rated colleges, conservatories and universities offering music-focused programs.

Litchfield Jazz Camp hosts both boarding and day students. Sessions run July 1-6, July 8-13, July 15-20, and July 22-27. Washington CT is about midway between Boston and New York. The region is served by three major airports. Residential Life Assistants live in each dormitory, and the Camp is licensed by the CT Department of Health. It has a resident nurse, an on-call physician, a relationship with a nearby hospital, and CPR certified staff. This coverage provides safety and security for Campers and peace of mind for parents. Some need-based scholarships are available.
