Boston Pops Announces Winner of 2008 High-School Sing-Off Competition

BOSTON, MA: Keith Lockhart and The Boston Pops are pleased to announce the winner of the 2008 Boston Pops High School Sing-Off, its first High School musical competition. Katie Mayhew, from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School will have a dream come true, performing with the Boston Pops on July 3 and 4 as part of the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular sponsored by Liberty Mutual. Ms. Mayhew competed against 2 other finalists during the finals of the competition on July 1, singing "Being Alive" from Company accompanied by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. The July 4th program will also feature Rascal Flatts and will be hosted by Craig Ferguson.

The Boston Pops High School Sing-Off invited talented vocalists from across the Commonwealth to send in audition tapes of their performances of pieces from the musical theater repertoire. Over 200 applications came in, and the field was narrowed to the top 22 soloists and ensembles, who performed live in Symphony Hall on June 2. From those 22, the six semi-finalists were selected and from those six, three were selected as finalists. The other finalists were Samara Oster from Milton Academy and a quintet consisting of Adam Randall, Meghan Ryan, and Michael Ryan, of Briantree High School and Brianna Shetler, and Kirsten Shetler, of North Quincy Regional High School The Boston Pops High School Sing-Off is sponsored by Fidelity Investments.

Katie Mayhew, 16 and a sophomore, is a native Vineyarder and descendant of Governor Thomas Mayhew, the first European to settle the Island in the 1640s. Katie's aptitude and passion for music have been apparent from her toddler years. She took Suzuki violin lessons for 5 years, starting at age 4, has attended a summer theatre camp every year since the age of 6 and has been studying voice since she was 8. Katie also took 5 years of dance and participated in a by-invitation-only Dance Company. She belongs to a by-audition-only high school choral group which just returned from a tour of performances in Austria. She participates each year in her high school musical and performs at Island fund raisers. She also composes music in a variety of genres. Katie takes all Honors classes and hopes to study musical theatre in college. Her more immediate goals include getting her braces off and her driver's license.
