Summer Stages Dance at Concord Academy
Announces 2008 Meet the Artist Performance Series
CONCORD, MA:
Amy Spencer and Richard Colton, founders and artistic directors, have announced
Summer Stages Dance 2008 Meet the Artist Performance Series at Concord Academy,
featuring faculty and guest artists from this acclaimed summer dance and
choreography festival performing their work and participating in informal
conversations with the audience. Tere O’Connor Dance performs Rammed Earth on
Thursday, July 10 and Friday, July 11; Eiko & Koma with pianist Margaret Leng
Tan in Mourning on Thursday, July 17; Sara Rudner & Friends in Dancing-On-View:
The Summer Stages Variations on Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 24; and
the Choreographers’ Project Showcase on Saturday, July 26. Each evening includes
a pre-performance work-in-progress and a post-performance discussion with the
artists. The New York Times 's Jennifer Dunning calls it “intelligent and
thought-provoking,” and Karen Campbell of The Boston Globe says “the Summer
Stages Dance Festival always packs a punch with stellar guest artists.”
In 2008, Summer Stages Dance continues its initiative to forge creative
partnerships in the Boston community to bring contemporary dance to new venues
and new audiences by producing events at Rialto Restaurant & Bar, Coolidge
Corner Theatre and the Institute for Contemporary Art/Boston.
On three Tuesdays in July – July 8, 22 & 29 – Summer Stages Dance partners with
award-winning chef Jody Adams to host David Parker & The Bang Group in ShowDown,
Parker’s all-dancing reinvention of Irving Berlin’s classic musical “Annie Get
Your Gun,” at Rialto Restaurant + Bar in Cambridge. This series of “cabaret”
dinners features a three-course regional Italian menu, and as guests enjoy
Adams’ dessert course, Parker and his troupe take to the dining room floor.
Japanese-American choreographers and performers Eiko & Koma present two FREE
community events around Boston that explore their unique artistry. On Monday
July 14 a Media Talk at the Coolidge Corner Theatre explores their highly
regarded video repertory; and on Tuesday, July 15 they present a “Delicious
Movement Workshop” at the ICA/Boston.
And, on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27, Summer Stages Dance, in
collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, presents
“Dancing-On-View: The ICA Variations,” a dance installation directed by
legendary dancer/choreographer Sara Rudner.
Summer Stages Dance at Concord Academy is a prestigious three-week performance
and workshop series that has earned a distinctive reputation for its emphasis on
mentorship and on the creation of new work, and for presenting leading
contemporary dance artists in an acclaimed series of public events. The
workshop, July 6-29, takes place in a 2,500 square foot state-of-the-art dance
studio and performance space designed by award-winning architect Graham Gund on
the campus of Concord Academy, an independent secondary school where the
performing and visual arts are a central part of the curriculum.
