Good Theater Announces Three Maine Premieres & One Classic During 2009-2010

PORTLAND, ME: Good Theater is pleased to announce the shows for its 2009-2010 season which will mark the company’s eighth anniversary. The season features three Maine premieres, including two recent Broadway hits, an award winning musical, and one classic comedy. Good Theater is the professional company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 congress Street, on Munjoy Hill in Portland.

Good Theater will kick off the year in September with the recent Broadway success, THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED by Douglas Carter Beane. This recent Tony Award nominee for Best Play concerns a Hollywood actor coming out of the closet, the hustler he falls for, the hustler’s pregnant girlfriend and the star’s agent who tries to keep it all together and out of the press. Denise Poirier stars as the agent and Paul Drinan plays the movie star. THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED contains adult language, brief nudity and lots of laughs. The play runs September 17 through October 11.

The second show of the season will be the award winning FROST/NIXON by Peter Morgan running October 29 – November 22. Another recent Broadway success as well as a hit movie, FROST/NIXON has a cast of ten led by veteran actor Tony Reilly. You don’t need to know, love, or even like politics to be mesmerized by FROST/NIXON. This play is a riveting study about the events that went behind the scenes of the greatest interview of all-time.

Good Theater’s annual musical will be the award winning THE SPITFIRE GRILL with music and book by James Valcq, and lyrics and book by Fred Alley. THE SPITFIRE GRILL is based on the film by Lee David Zlotoff. The show won the 2001 Richard Rodgers Production Award administered by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This touching show has a stunning, uplifting score that will warm your heart. A young stranger wakes up a sleepy town restoring hope to the residents of Gilead, Wisconsin. THE SPITFIRE GRILL plays January 21 through February 14.

The final main stage show of the season will be Oscar Wilde’s classic THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST. Opening March 4 and playing through March 28, this comedic romp will be given a first-class production by Good Theater with stunning costumes and sets. “I’ve always wanted to do this show,” says Good Theater’s Artistic Director, Brian P. Allen. “It is a perfect play with delightful characters and a lovely way to end our eighth season.”

In addition to these four main stage shows, Good Theater will offer two special events: the annual Broadway/holiday concert, BROADWAY AT GOOD THEATER, will play December 3 – 6. Good Theater’s Artistic Director, Brian P. Allen, debuts his one-man show, THE DIVA & ME, on September 30 in a special fundraising event.
